"The Gardens: Kick-butt amusement park meets zoo. Very expensive admission price. If you go in through the gate."

The Gardens is a large wildlife and amusement park in the area of California where the Animorphs lived. Michelle, Cassie's mother, is the head veterinarian. The Animorphs often visited The Gardens to acquire their morphs.

"The main part of The Gardens is rides. They have all the usual stuff, like roller coasters, which are my personal favorite, and Ferris wheels and water slides. But they also have an animal part, which is like a zoo, only cooler. They do dolphin shows, and there's this whole section where you can get close to some of the safer animals. And this monkey habitat they have is like a whole monkey city, practically. Anyway, if I were an animal, and I had to be in a zoo, I'd want to be there. Cassie led us to the main building, which holds all kinds of exhibits. It has everything but the really big animals that need lots of space. Those animals are farther out, mostly, in big grassy habitats that look like parks. Parks with walls and moats and fences around them. The main building is supposed to be like a rain forest, I guess. It's where they keep animals that need to be warm all the time. There's a pathway that winds around with tall tropical trees overhead, with bushes here and there between the exhibits."

Acquiring Morphs[]

"I think we need a little more firepower. We should head for The Gardens. We need to acquire more DNA — from some animals that are not going to be easy to acquire."
"Yeah. I don't think the hawk, horse, and lizard team is going to impress the Yeerks. Rachel's right. I think we have to head to The Gardens. We need to get some help from Mother Earth's toughest children."
Rachel and Jake[src]

In 1997,[2] on a Monday afternoon, the five founding Animorphs visited The Gardens in order to acquire more dangerous morphs in preparation for their foray into the Yeerk pool that night. Although Cassie had a pass that allowed her to enter for free, the others needed tickets. Pooling their limited cash to pay for admission, the group entered through the main gate and headed to the otter exhibit, where Cassie revealed a hidden door that led to the employee hallways, which contained numbered doors leading to the other animal enclosures. Cassie led them to the enclosure where Big Jim, a Silverback gorilla, resided. After Marco acquired him, they were interrupted by an employee, prompting them to leave the enclosure. Finding themselves at a crossroads, Rachel wished to head towards the dolphin tanks, although Cassie stated they wouldn't have a need for that morph. Marco went in the opposite direction towards the more dangerous animals, citing their need for firepower. However, they were then spotted by a security guard, prompting them to split up.

Jake and Marco continued down their path as the other three went another way. The two boys stole an electric golf cart and drove away from the security guard only to be spotted by two younger men, who began to pursue them. The boys then ran through one of the doors, which ended up being the Siberian tigers enclosure. Jake managed to acquire the male before they both fled, narrowly avoiding being bitten by the other tiger that was there. Finding themselves still being pursued by the guards, Jake and Marco escaped into a crowd and hunched themselves as they waddled back to the main gate. Meanwhile, Cassie, Rachel and Tobias, who were able to escape without pursuit, paid a visit to the African elephant area, where Rachel acquired one of them. With Cassie and Tobias electing not to acquire anything, the trio made their way to the main entrance, where they found Jake and Marco. The five then left The Gardens.[3]

Not too long after, Jake, Rachel, Cassie and Marco visited The Gardens on a Thursday afternoon to acquire dolphin morphs, with Tobias flying overhead; as he had been trapped in red-tailed hawk morph, he was unable to acquire a dolphin. That day, The Gardens held a promotion where if two full priced admission tickets were bought, a third ticket could be bought for a dollar; Jake and Rachel purchased two tickets, allowing for Marco to buy his ticket for a dollar. Several hundreds of people were watching a dolphin performance, as The Gardens had six bottlenose dolphins: Joey, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe and Rachel, who were named after the cast of Friends and were being trained by a dolphin trainer named Eileen. After the show concluded, the four human Animorphs met with Eileen and each acquired one of the dolphins, with Cassie acquiring Monica. A few days later, Cassie flew into The Gardens late at night and entered the dolphin tank, where she then morphed into a dolphin and spent time playing with the other dolphins.[4]

Much later, Rachel flew into The Gardens by herself in the middle of the night, wishing to update her battle morph. Landing in the grizzly bear enclosure, she demorphed and acquired the male grizzly bear before returning back home.[5]

"I knew The Gardens well. Within it was a zoo where Prince Jake, the others, and I had acquired a number of useful morphs."

  1. According to #54: The Beginning, it is in California. VISSER also reveals it is mid-sized coastal city, with series co-author Michael Grant describing the fictional city as a blend between Orange County and Long Beach.
  2. The Andalite Chronicles is said to take place 10 years after the 1966 Yeerk exodus of The Hork-Bajir Chronicles and 21 years before Elfangor met the Animorphs. This places it in 1976, meaning the Animorphs met Elfangor in 1997.
