The Capture graphic novel was published on March 4, 2025. It is adapted by Chris Grine and is based on The Capture. It is the sixth and final installment in the Animorphs Graphix series.

Synopsis[]

It was bad enough when Jake found out his older brother was one of them. It was even worse when Tobias stayed in his morph too long. But nothing compares to the horror the Animorphs are about to face -- nothing.

The Animorphs have discovered the location of the Yeerks's new base. They've even figured out how to get in -- and they have a plan to hit those alien slugs where it hurts.

But they were never prepared for Jake to fall into a Yeerk pool. For Jake to become a human controller. The enemy.

It's a race against the clock as the Animorphs face their biggest challenge yet: Save Jake before the Yeerk can expose them all ...

Plot[]

Jake is sitting in his room listening to music when "Tom" enters tells him that he is going to an event hosted by The Sharing and that their parents are not home. After "Tom" leaves, Jake dresses in his morphing outfit and pulls out a matchbox, which contains a cockroach he has captured. Jake acquires the cockroach and then heads into the kitchen of the empty house, where he morphs into the cockroach. However, is overwhelmed by the kitchen light and runs under the refrigerator, and as he makes his way to the back of the refrigerator, he gets caught in a roach trap.

Later that day, at Cassie's barn, Jake is meeting with the other Animorphs, where he tells them about what happened while morphing into a roach. He explains that while he was stuck, he learned how to interpret spoken sounds while in cockroach morph, which caused him to realize that his parents had returned home. Noticing that his parents were in their room, Jake demorphed behind the fridge, only for his mother to come into the kitchen and ask him why he was behind the fridge with a roach trap in his hair. Marco inquires into why Jake had morphed into a cockroach to begin with, and Jake discloses that he has been spying on "Tom" and that "Tom" has been calling five doctors at a hospital called the Berman Clinic. Rachel wonders why the Yeerks would takeover a hospital, to which Marco responds that the Yeerks are using it to infest patients as host bodies. That evening, Jake is at home doing homework in the kitchen when "Tom" returns and tries to invite Jake to join The Sharing. Jake refuses, not wanting to be part of a group, and "Tom" walks away.

Rachel's bedroom GN6

The Animorphs at Rachel's House

The next day, the Animorphs meet up at Rachel's House in order to practice morphing into a cockroach. After an hour, during which they master how to hear human speech while in roach morph, they demorph and discuss their plan to stop the Yeerks' hospital mission. Jake suddenly tells the group that they don't all need to come and that he can do it himself, and explains his worries: as he believes "Tom" in charge of the hospital operation, the Animorphs could get into a fight with "Tom"; another worry is that if they stop the Yeerks' hospital plan, Visser Three would punish "Tom" for mission failure, which may result in the Visser killing Tom. Cassie suggests abandoning the mission and letting the Yeerks infest patients in order to keep Tom alive, although Jake is hesitant. Marco advises that they perform reconnaissance in order to learn more about the Yeerks' plans before making a decision themselves, which Jake agrees to.

Visser Three Human Morph GN6

Visser Three in his human morph

On Thursday night, the Animorphs head to a building where The Sharing conducts their meetings. Jake, who investigated the area earlier, guides them to the basement of an abandoned building very close by, where the Animorphs morph into cockroaches before making their way to The Sharing's building. As they enter the building, Tobias, who is outside, warns them that three vehicles, including a limousine, have pulled up and that there are armed guards along with a staggering man who has exited the limo. The staggering man enters the meeting room and is revealed to be Visser Three in a human morph. The Animorphs listen as Visser Three discusses their takeover of the hospital, and discloses to the other Controllers that the governor would be visiting the Berman Clinic soon for a minor surgery, where he will then be infested. The Animorphs become worried, since the governor controls the state police and the National Guard, but Rachel tells them that it is much worse; she notifies them that the governor is in the running to become President of the United States, and therefore his infestation could place a Controller in the White House. The Animorphs, having learned enough, decide to make their retreat when they are spotted by the Controllers, who attempt to crush them. The others manage to escape, but Jake is hit with bug spray. Badly poisoned, Jake manages to make his way to the entrance, where Tobias swoops down and rescues him. Tobias flies Jake to the roof of a nearby restaurant, where Jake safely demorphs. Tobias discloses to Jake that he saw "Tom" leaving with Visser Three and that they seemed close, causing Jake to once again worry what would happen to his brother if they stop the hospital mission.

Cassie morphing fly GN6

Cassie morphing into a housefly

The next day at school, on Friday, Marco catches up with Jake and tells him that the governor will be having his surgery on Tuesday, having obtained the governor's schedule. He proposes that they infiltrate the hospital tomorrow, and shares that Cassie has already come up with a morph for them to use. Jake wonders what it is, and Marco gives him a hint: "Think hot, steaming dog poop." The next day, on Saturday, Jake goes to Cassie's barn to help her with her chores, where he notices a fly buzzing around a pile of horse poop. Realizing that Cassie's idea is for them to morph into flies, he brings this up with her. The two discuss potential other morphs before realizing that they are not viable, and ultimately decide to stick with the fly plan as they believe they will only need it to infiltrate the hospital; on their way out, they plan to cause damage and destruction, which will allow them to exit the premises in another morph. Later that day, the other Animorphs come to the barn, and the morph-capable members acquire houseflies. Cassie is the first to morph, and after she confirms that the fly brain can be managed and that the experience is quite fun, the other morph-capable Animorphs join her. They then land on Tobias, as the plan is for Tobias to fly them to the Berman Clinic.

Arriving at the hospital, they enter through an open window before Jake splits the group into two — Cassie and Ax with him, and Marco and Rachel on their own. The three try to locate the scent of a portable Yeerk pool, which they believe must be in the hospital. Locating the scent, they fly under the door of a room, where Jake tells Ax to demorph first. As he does so, Jake and Cassie hear a loud noise, and Ax tells them that there was a man in the room who is now unconscious. Jake and Cassie demorph and find themselves in a room with a Jacuzzi whirlpool containing several Yeerks. Learning that it is a portable Yeerk pool, Jake decides to boil the Yeerks to death and works on reactivating the Jacuzzi while ordering Cassie and Ax, the former using her wolf morph, to guard the door. As he does so, two doctor Controllers enter the room and spot Ax, and the woman-Controller is tackled by Cassie as the male-Controller uses his radio to call for backup; however, before he can finish, Ax slices his hand off. With the two Controllers still in the room, Jake, who is standing near the portable Yeerk pool, yells at Ax to block the door so that he can morph into a tiger.

Jake and Temrash 114 GN6

Jake is controlled by Temrash 114

Just then, a security guard Controller enters the room with a Dracon beam and fires it; the beam misses Jake and hits the wall behind him, triggering an explosion that causes Jake to fall into the Jacuzzi. He is then brought back to the surface and awakens to see Marco in front of him in his gorilla morph, but remarks that his head hurts. As Marco carries him, Rachel in elephant morph begins to clear their exit, and a voice in Jake's head wonders with surprise about Rachel being human. Marco brings Jake down the stairs as the Animorphs make their escape, and Jake once again exclaims that his head hurts and that he cannot think. Just then, Jake finds himself in a mental space and sees a darker version of him surprised that "they" are humans. Jake believes it to be a dream or that his voice is his conscious, but when the other voice refers to Jake as being a "servant of the Andalite filth," Jake realizes with anger that the voice in his head is a Yeerk and that he has been infested.

Cassie, in horse morph, carries Jake from the hospital to the forest, where she notices that he seems "zoned out." Jake attempts to notify Cassie that he has been infested but finds that he has no control over his body. The Yeerk introduces himself to Jake as Temrash 114 and discloses that he was the Yeerk who once controlled Tom. Jake initially believes that Tom is freed, much to Temrash's amusement, who laughs and tells Jake that Tom is now the host body to a Yeerk of a lower rank and that he was to receive a new host, which Jake immediately realizes to be the governor. Temrash muses that Jake is a better host since Visser Three is keen to find them, and that he can deliver them, including Ax, to Visser Three. Marco arrives demorphed in the woods as Cassie suggests bringing Jake to a doctor since he is not responsive; just then, "Jake" begins speaking and states that he does not need to see a doctor. As Tobias flies to retrieve Rachel and Ax, Temrash, as Jake, tells the other Animorphs that they need to split into their separate ways. "Jake" is then touched by someone behind him, and as Temrash turns Jake's body around, he finds himself face-to-face with Ax, who quickly puts his tail blade to Jake's throat and accuses "Jake" of being a Controller.

While "Jake" refutes this claim, the other Animorphs are unsure, and Tobias suggests holding Jake for three days to be sure. Cassie points out that they cannot detain Jake for three days as his family would notice his disappearance and go searching for him, while Marco muses that if Jake has indeed been infested, the Yeerk inside knows all of their secrets and therefore they cannot risk Jake's Yeerk speaking with another Yeerk. Cassie comes up with an idea for Ax to morph into Jake and assume his identity for three days to prevent Jake's family from noticing his absence, but as Ax puts his hand on Jake's head to acquire him, "Jake" slaps his hand away and refers to Ax as "Andalite filth," which confirms to the Animorphs that Jake is being controlled by a Yeerk.

GN6

Tobias informs the group that he knows of a shack in the forest where they can detain Jake and leads the way. At the shack, the Animorphs find a chair and decide to keep Jake tied in the chair with rope. "Jake" tells them that their plan will not work, but Ax, who has morphed into Jake, disagrees. "Jake" once again states that it will not work and states that Tom's Yeerk will discover the truth within an hour, and the other Animorphs tell Temrash that the real Jake would have helped Ax convincingly play the part to prevent Tom from finding out. Tied up to the chair, Temrash has fantasies of escaping and reporting to Visser Three, as well as the subsequent promotion he would receive, which Jake mocks. In response, Temrash accesses a fantasy Jake has of being a basketball player and being praised by Tom, and then plays a memory of when he, as Tom, was in Jake's room announcing that he was leaving to go a meeting of The Sharing. Temrash transmits Tom's inner thoughts, with Tom begging for Jake to be spared.

That night, Rachel, who is on a couch in front of Jake's chair, falls asleep while reading The Art of War. Almost immediately as she falls asleep, Temrash begins morphing into a tiger and breaks through the ropes. He assures Jake that he will not kill Rachel, due to Rachel being morph-capable, and affirms that he will deliver the four morph-capable Animorphs along with Ax to Visser Three. As a tiger, Temrash runs out of the shack and into the forest, but is stunned to find the scent of humans nearby. Temrash runs through the forest for an hour trying to find a way out, and is once again alarmed by the scent of nearby humans this late in the forest at night. Temrash then demorphs and begins remorphing into a falcon, electing to fly away, when he is attacked by a great horned owl, revealed to be none other than Cassie in morph. With the falcon too injured to fly, Temrash demorphs and remorphs, this time into a wolf, and runs away. While running, he hears the howls of two other wolves and realizes that there are other wolves nearby, which Jake states is a wild wolf pack that they had previously encountered. Temrash finds the path ahead of him blocked by the wild wolf pack and the path behind him blocked by Marco and Rachel, in their human and elephant forms respectively. Marco asks Temrash to return to the shack, and when Temrash bears his teeth, Marco reminds him that he cannot win a fight against a wolf pack and an elephant. Defeated, Temrash surrenders, demorphs, and returns to the shack.

The next morning, on Sunday, Temrash again tries to escape, this time as an ant, but is thwarted when an enemy ant colony begins to rip his body apart. On Monday night, as Marco is asleep during guard duty, Temrash morphs into falcon and breaks out the chair, only for Tobias to swoop down and hold the falcon head in his talons. Tobias threatens to kill Temrash unless he demorphs and returns to the chair; Temrash points out that if he does so, he'll be killing Jake as well, and Tobias tells him that it is better to be dead than a Controller. Tobias then adds that he does need to kill him as he can simply gouge his eyes out, since a blind falcon cannot fly far. Defeated once more, Temrash demorphs. With just five hours left until Temrash dies of Kandrona ray starvation, Temrash recalls his past on the Yeerk homeworld, and tells Jake about the Yeerks' first host bodies, the Gedds. Temrash comments that the Yeerks only had Gedds for hosts when the Andalites first arrived on their planet, but refuses to elaborate, instead telling Jake to ask Ax if he wants the full story.

A few hours later, Temrash begins experiencing the Fugue, the final moments of a Yeerk's life as he dies from starvation. As Jake lies on the floor of the shack, Cassie holds his hand. As Temrash dies, he transfers his memories and experiences as a Gedd-Controller and Hork-Bajir-Controller to Jake, as well as his time controlling Tom. Jake sees the memory of how Tom got infested: he had joined The Sharing as he had a crush on a girl, but when he crashed a leadership meeting to see if she was seeing another boy, he glimpsed Visser Three in his Andalite form; as a result, Tom was restrained by the human-Controllers before being taken down to the Underground Yeerk Pool Complex, where he was then infested by Temrash. Jake remarks that Temrash carried a part of his hosts with him, which has now been transferred to Jake. Temrash then dies, and Jake shares the experience of the Fugue with Cassie.

That evening, Jake is at home when his parents question why he is not eating much, citing it to be a stark contrast to his behavior the last few days when he was eating ravenously. A few days later, Jake and Marco travel to a payphone outside of their vicinity so that Jake can leave a message. Jake partially morphs into a wolf to obscure his voice and uses the payphone to call his house, where "Tom" picks up, and Jake tells Tom to never give up before ending the call. Jake and Marco assume their raptor morphs and take to the sky, and wonder whether they will win in the end.

Major/Highlighted Events[]

  • Jake discovers that "Tom" has become a high-ranking Controller, just below "Chapman", and that "Tom" is in charge of a massive plan by the Yeerk Empire to infest patients at the Berman Clinic, a newly built hospital that the Yeerks control. During a reconnaissance mission, the Animorphs learn that their state governor is having a minor operation performed at the Berman Clinic and that the governor is in the running to become the next President of the United States.
  • The Animorphs infiltrate the hospital, where they spot a Jacuzzi containing Yeerks. Jake activates the Jacuzzi and boils the Yeerks alive just before a few human-Controllers enter the room. Ax and Cassie engage in a fight, the latter in wolf morph, although Jake remains in his human form. One of the Controllers pulls out a Dracon beam to shoot at Jake, but misses; however, the beam hits the wall behind Jake and triggers an explosion, which sends Jake flying into the Jacuzzi.
  • Jake is infested by a Yeerk named Temrash 114.
    • Temrash reveals to Jake that he was the Yeerk who had been controlling Tom, and that Tom is now infested by another Yeerk of a lower rank.
  • Ax informs the other Animorphs that he suspects "Jake" of being a Controller. In order to be certain, they decide to keep Jake tied up for three days, since a Yeerk cannot survive for longer than three days without Kandrona rays. Cassie suggests that Ax morph into Jake for three days to prevent Jake's parents from noticing his absence. However, when Ax touches Jake to acquire him, Temrash slaps Ax's hand away and calls him "Andalite filth," outing himself as a Controller.
  • Temrash shares his memories of the Yeerk homeworld and the memories of his first three hosts (a Gedd, a Hork-Bajir, and Tom) with Jake. It is revealed that Tom joined The Sharing as he had a crush on a girl who was a member, but crashed one of The Sharing's meetings when he thought she was seeing another boy. At the meeting, Tom had spotted Visser Three in his Andalite form, which caused him to be restrained and brought to the Underground Yeerk Pool Complex to be infested. Temrash reveals that to Jake that Tom has since given up fighting the Yeerk in his head.
  • After three days, Temrash undergoes the Fugue and dies, and Jake is freed.

Notable Differences from Original Novel[]

  • In the original novel, Jake is eating breakfast in the kitchen when he speaks with "Tom." After "Tom" leaves for The Sharing's cleanup event, Jake goes to his room, where he acquires and morphs into a cockroach. Shortly after, his parents return home and his mother enters his room and turns on the light, causing Jake's roach mind to be overwhelmed. Jake then uses the cracks in the baseboard to get into the kitchen, where he gets stuck to a Roach Motel behind the refrigerator. In the graphic novel, Jake is eating chips in his bedroom when "Tom" enters to tell him that he is leaving for The Sharing's cleanup event. After "Tom" leaves, Jake acquires the cockroach but decides to leave his room and morph in the kitchen as he is home alone. Upon completing the morph, the cockroach brain is overwhelmed by the kitchen light, prompting Jake to go under the refrigerator, where he gets stuck, after which his parents return home.
  • Jake refers to Cassie as "Cass"; however, while this does not happen in the original book, and was only uttered by Jake twice in the entire 64-book run of the original series, Jake refers to Cassie as "Cass" constantly in the graphic novel adaptations.
  • Ax is present at the meeting at the barn, in human morph. In the original novel, Ax did not attend this first meeting.
  • In the graphic novel, Jake returns home and is working on homework by himself in the kitchen when "Tom" comes home after dinner and asks what he missed, upon which Jake tells him about dinner and the fact that their father injured his leg. In the original novel, Jake returns home and has dinner with his parents when "Tom" returns during dinner, and learns about his father's injured leg as his father is at the dinner table. Jake leaves the dinner table to go upstairs and do his homework afterwards.
  • The Animorphs practice morphing in Rachel's bedroom at her house instead of at Marco's bedroom in his new apartment.
  • Beer can is changed to soda can.
  • Visser Three's human morph is a Black man in the graphic novel, whereas in the original books, he is described as being pale (white).
  • Just like the previous graphic novels, dialogue said by certain characters are now given to other characters instead. For instance, Cassie is the one who tells Ax what the governor is in the graphic novel, as opposed to the original book, where it was Jake. In another example, in the original novel, it is Jake who is worried when he cannot see Cassie (who has morphed into a fly) and therefore keeps asking Tobias if he can see her. In the graphic novel, these lines are given to Rachel.
  • The previous graphic novel was set in 1997. In this book, Rachel states that the governor is running for President "next year," which is not an election year. However, this error is also present in the original novel.
  • Jake's dream of stalking Tom in tiger morph is not featured. According to Chris Grine, this was intentional, as he felt the book was bloated; he also remarked that the payoff to the dream did not occur until very late in the original series, and thus was not a scene that would be revisited in his graphic novels, since his adaptations would never get that far.[1]
  • In the novel, Jake struggles during basketball, which Juan comments on. In the graphic novel, the indication is that Jake excelled during basketball, as Juan tells him that he got lucky.
  • In the original novel, Jake, Rachel, and Cassie go to the mall on Friday after school, which is where Jake and Cassie discuss the plan to morph into flies the next day. In the graphic novel, this is replaced with an original scene, set on Saturday morning, where Jake at the barn helping Cassie with her chores and where the pair discuss the fly plan. Because this new scene is set on Saturday, Jake and Cassie's discussion of their hospital infiltration plan in the graphic novel is happening on the same day of the infiltration rather than the day before as it was in the original novel.
  • Jake states in the original novel that Cassie only comes up to his chin; Jake is depicted as being much shorter in the graphic novel.
  • Jake's ability to rewire a Jacuzzi is left unexplained in the books. In this, it's explained that he helped his father rewire the garage the previous summer.
  • The hospital attack scene plays out vastly different than it does in the book, most notably Jake being visible in human form to the Controllers and the method of how Jake ends up infested.
    • In the original novel, Jake activates the Jacuzzi when two doctors (a man and woman) who are Controllers enter. Cassie, in wolf morph, pounces on the woman Controller while Ax tries to use his tail on the male Controller, who dodges it. Two other Controllers, who are armed guards, enter the room. Jake plans to quickly morph into tiger as he is out of sight but yells out a warning to Ax when one of the guards pulls out a gun, and Ax cuts his hand off. The second guard then uses his radio to ask for reinforcements before shooting into the room, and one of the bullets ricochets and hits the side of Jake's head, causing his face to fall into the Jacuzzi. As Jake pulls his face out of the Jacuzzi upon regaining consciousness, Rachel and Marco then arrive, and Marco, in gorilla morph, puts a lab coat on Jake's face to obscure Jake's identity before carrying him out of the hospital. As a result, none of the Controllers have seen Jake's face or have heard "the Andalite bandits" speak out loud as humans. Upon exiting the building, Marco has Cassie demorph and remorph into a horse, and Cassie takes Jake to the national forest. During the trip, Jake hears a voice in his head and questions what it is, and it is only when they arrive at the forest that he realizes he has been infested and that there is a Yeerk in his head.
    • In the graphic novel, Jake activates the Jacuzzi when two doctors (a man and woman) who are Controllers enter. Cassie, in wolf morph, pounces on the woman Controller while the male Controller uses his radio to call for backup moments before Ax uses his tail blade to cut the man's hand off. Jake, in full view of the other Controllers, yells at Ax to block the door as he announces that he will morph into a tiger. Just then, a security guard with a Dracon beam enters the room. As he points the Dracon beam at Ax, Jake yells Ax's name out loud right before Ax uses his tail blade to try and attack the guard-Controller, which causes the latter to fire a Dracon beam at the wall. This results in an explosion that causes Jake's entire body to go flying into the Jacuzzi Yeerk pool, and he sinks down into the water as he is then infested. Jake is then pulled out by an Animorph before Marco, in gorilla morph, picks up Jake. A lab coat is placed on Jake's body rather than his face, which is left uncovered. Marco then carries Jake through the hospital as the Animorphs fight their way out, and Jake's face remains uncovered and in full view. While they are in the hospital, Marco tells Cassie to morph into horse when she's outside in order so that she can carry Jake to safety. Jake hears a voice in his head and believes he is hearing his conscience when the voice mocks him, and Jake realizes that he has been infested by a Yeerk. This revelation happens as Cassie is carrying Jake out to the national forest.
    • The guard at the hospital shooting at the Animorphs used a gun in the original book, although in the graphic novel, he uses a Dracon beam instead. This change occurred due to Scholastic's mandate, effective as of The Predator, that guns could not be depicted.[1]
  • In the novel, when Jake and Temrash speak to one each other, it is only described as mental voices. In the graphic novel, it is instead shown as Jake and Temrash both standing in a white space within Jake's mind, with Temrash as a colorized Jake dressed in a black sweater while the real Jake is depicted in muted colors, wearing a regular T-shirt. However, after Tobias stops Temrash from escaping in falcon morph, Temrash becomes depicted in muted colors while the real Jake is now in full color.
  • In the original novel, Tom's nickname for Jake was "m*dget." This is changed to "dork" for the graphic novel.
  • There is a slight difference in the ordering of dialogue during the scene where "Jake" is exposed to be a Controller.
    • In the original novel, Ax has his tail blade to Jake's throat the entire time during the confrontation, and all Temrash can do when Ax acquires Jake is to yell and call him "Andalite filth." The Animorphs then walk towards the shack, where Temrash comments that their plan to have Ax morph into Jake will not work. Rachel confronts Temrash, and it is revealed that Ax has morphed into Jake. When Temrash claims that he gives Ax an hour until Tom's Yeerk figures it out, this cements to the other Animorphs that "Jake" is a Controller. They eventually reach the shack, where Jake is tied (with his hands in front of him) and is made to sit on the floor, as the shack is empty and derelict. As a result, when Rachel is on guard duty, she is sitting on the floor too, where she then pretends to fall asleep. Temrash takes a short while after Rachel has "fallen asleep" to morph into a tiger and escape.
    • In the graphic novel, after the Animorphs believe Jake has been infested, Ax no longer has his tail blade to Jake's throat and shortly after attempts to acquire him, only for Temrash to slap Ax's hand away and refer to him as Andalite filth. They then all take the time to dress back in their normal clothes, "Jake" included, before walking to the shack. Inside the shack is a chair and a sofa, and Jake is made to sit in the chair and has his hands tied behind his back. It is here where the conversation regarding the plan to have Ax morph into Jake is had, and it is in the shack where Ax morphs into Jake and Temrash makes his remark that Tom's Yeerk will discover them. As the shack has a sofa, Rachel sits on the sofa and audibly remarks that she's falling asleep, which is when Temrash immediately morphs into tiger and makes his escape.
  • In the graphic novel, Temrash spends an hour wandering the forest as a tiger, whereas in the original novel, it was only ten minutes.
  • Jake's remark on the alpha male wolf's strength from the original novel is changed to the strength of the wolf pack in the graphic novel, due to the notion of the "alpha male wolf" being scientifically disproven in-between the publishing of the original novel and the graphic novel.
  • Jake's experience of viewing Temrash's memories and Tom's infestation are reframed as him telling Cassie about it after the fact.
  • Jake does not witness Crayak like he does in the novel.
  • Rather than using Cassie's father's cell phone to call Tom like he does in the original novel, with the other Animorphs listening, in the graphic novel it is only Marco and Jake, who travel out of their vicinity to use a payphone to make the call. The call also happens a few days later, whereas in the original, it was the very next day.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first book in the graphic novel series to skip over or cut out sections from the original novel.[1]
  • This is the first book in the graphic novel series which does not include a "To Be Continued" at the end of the book. This is because this is the last graphic novel in the Animorphs Graphix series.
  • Tom's nickname for Jake is changed from "m*dget" from the original novel to "dork" for the graphic novel. This is because the former word, which was not classified as a slur in 1997 when the original book was published, is considered a slur in 2025, when the graphic novel was published.
  • The Art of War GN6

    The Art of War

The book that Rachel is reading during guard duty is unspecified in the original novel, but in the graphic novel, it is revealed to be The Art of War. This is a reference to the The Visitor, where it is revealed that Rachel has transcribed quotes from The Art of War in her bedroom.
  • The Controller security guard at the hospital on pages 107, 108 and 113 resembles Hedrick Chapman without his glasses.
  • Jake's parents are drawn significantly and noticeably differently compared to how they were drawn in the first graphic novel. On page 193 of The Invasion, Jake's father is drawn slightly thinner, clean shaven, and his hair was slicked to his left. In this book, his face is slightly shorter (more like a noticeably older Jake), he has a mustache, and his hair is slicked to the right. Jake's mother appears noticeably younger than she did in The Invasion, with a different face and with a different hair color, having brown hair as opposed to the ginger hair she had in The Invasion.

Goofs/Inconsistencies[]

  • This graphic novel uses a lot of the text from the original 1997 version verbatim, which causes inconsistencies when corresponding scenes are changed or removed.
    • The original novel uses Roach Motel, which is changed to a generic "roach trap" in the graphic novel. However, one instance of "Roach Motel" was left in, when Jake's mother inquires about Jake being behind the refrigerator. This is most likely due to the line being copy-pasted from the original and the mention of "Roach Motel", which was intended to be removed, was forgotten.
    • In the original novel, Jake and "Tom" are at the dinner table where Jake points out that "Tom" had quit the basketball team before making it clear he does not wish to join The Sharing. As Jake leaves the dinner table, he is confronted by "Tom", who asks Jake what better things he has to do, to which Jake responds that he was hanging out with Marco. In response, "Tom" states that there are better things to do than to be part of a team or to hang out with Marco. In the graphic novel, the dinner scene is removed, and "Tom" instead speaks to Jake in the kitchen after dinner. Jake's mention of Tom joining the basketball team is removed, and he only mentions hanging out with Marco; however, due to the line being copy-pasted from the original, Tom responds with "There are cooler things than hanging out with Marco. Cooler than being on some bogus team." despite the fact that in the graphic novel, Jake never brought up the team whatsoever.
    • In the original novel, Jake morphed into cockroach in front of his mirror, causing him to witness the changes being done, which disgusted him. Later, when the other Animorphs morph into cockroaches for the first time, Jake speaks from personal experience when he advises them not to look at each other or into a mirror while morphing. In the graphic novel, Jake does not morph in front of his mirror. Later, when the rest of the team practices morphing into the cockroach for the first time, Jake's line is ported straight from the original novel where he advises them not to morph into a roach near a mirror, despite not having experienced this himself.
  • The graphic novel retains the error from the original novel of Temrash 114 claiming that his name used to be Temrash 252. Later books in the original series would reveal that a Yeerk's name is fixed at birth and does not change based on rank or promotion.
  • Ax barely has his fingers on Jake's head before Temrash slaps it away almost instantly. Ax never attempts to make physical contact with Jake again, and yet has managed to acquire Jake's DNA in order to morph into him. This was not an issue in the original book, where Temrash was unable to stop Ax from acquiring Jake due to Ax keeping his tail blade at Jake's throat.
  • During the Fugue, Jake is depicted as having a bandage on his head due to the Dracon beam he was struck with in the hospital. However, since his body had already morphed and demorphed between that injury and the Fugue, that injury would already have been healed. The ability to use morphing and demorphing to heal injuries was even utilized in a graphic novel exclusive scene in the previous graphic novel.
