"How do you know they aren't real Park Rangers?"
"Because real Park Rangers don't carry machine guns. Plus, they don't hang around with Hork-Bajir. [...] The Park Rangers are clearing out the area around the lake. They hustled some campers out of there real fast. At gunpoint."

The National Park Service is an agency of the United States federal government that manages all national parks. Several Park Rangers were infested by the Yeerk Empire early on during their invasion of Earth.

History[]

"Then, to my surprise, several dozen uniformed men jumped from the trucks and began to fan out through the woods. They were carrying guns. But not rifles or even pistols. I could see them clearly. They were carrying automatic weapons. [...] To my left I spotted a pair of helicopters. They zipped just inches above the trees. They began to circle the lake. These also had Park Service markings. This is all wrong, I told myself. These guys don't act or move like Park Rangers. These guys move like an army."
Tobias[src]

In 1995,[1] the Yeerk Empire began a secret invasion of Earth[2] out of a city in California.[3] By 1997,[4] several members of this city's National Park Service had been infested by the Yeerks and turned into Controllers.

In order to obtain water for their Pool ship, the Yeerk Empire deployed a Truck ship to drain water from a lake in the mountains. Park Ranger Controllers, armed with automatic weapons, then drove their Jeeps, marked with the Park Service insignia, to the mountains to clear out any humans who happened to be there, rounding up those they found and driving them elsewhere. At the same time, a Park Ranger Controller piloted a Park Service helicopter containing a Hork-Bajir-Controller and landed the helicopter by the lake to deposit the Hork-Bajir. The Park Service Controllers continued these daily operations every day for a week. Near the end of the week, they attempted to capture a human man who had spotted a Hork-Bajir, although they failed. The next day, the Park Ranger Controllers worked in tandem with multiple Hork-Bajir-Controllers to tighten security around the lake, and began killing any animal that saw. However, the actions of the Animorphs resulted in the destruction of the Truck ship, bringing an end to this specific operation.[5]

Trivia[]

Nate and Tyler as Park Rangers

Two Park Rangers drawn as Nate and Tyler from the Animorphing Time podcast

  • In The Encounter, a group of infested Park Rangers enter the national forest with official NPS vehicles and force campers to evacuate, while the Yeerks use Park Service helicopters to bring in Hork-Bajir-Controllers to the forest. However, national forests are administered by the United States Forest Service and thus are not within the Park Service's jurisdiction; therefore, the presence of Park Service trucks and helicopters within the national forest should theoretically have caused suspicion if any authorities or civilians noticed.
  • Two of the Park Rangers shown in the graphic novel are modeled after Nate and Tyler, the hosts of the Animorphing Time podcast. Chris Grine is a big fan of the podcast and has appeared on the podcast before, and drew the Park Rangers to look like them as a tribute.

  1. In VISSER, Edriss 562 launches the invasion of Earth and fakes the death of her host, Eva. In #1, Eva is said to have died/disappeared two years prior. As #1 takes place in 1997, this places Eva's disappearance, and the beginning of the invasion of Earth, in 1995.

  4. This transpires in #3: The Encounter, which is set less than a month after #1: The Invasion. The Andalite Chronicles is said to take place 10 years after the 1966 Yeerk exodus of The Hork-Bajir Chronicles and 21 years before Elfangor met the Animorphs. This places it in 1976, meaning the Animorphs met Elfangor in 1997.
