"You think I abandoned you. And I guess in a way I did. But I couldn't raise a little boy alone. I was blind. Permanently. Facing years of physical therapy. You needed someone who could take care of you. Someone who at least remembered you. [...] I just thought — hoped — you were happy. With people who cared about you. Who at least knew who you were. You didn't need a crazy, blind woman in your life."
―Loren to Tobias[src]

Loren is the mother of Tobias and Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul's human wife, as well as the sister-in-law of Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill. As a teenager in 1976, she was kidnapped from Earth alongside Hedrick Chapman by the Skrit Na. They were soon intercepted by the Andalites, where she met Elfangor. She was briefly infested during a visit to the Taxxon homeworld, thus becoming the second human to ever be infested by a Yeerk. However, she was freed by Elfangor, and the pair used the Time Matrix to return to Earth, although it rapidly aged Loren's human body by three years to the age of eighteen.

Now physically an adult, Loren married Elfangor, who had trapped himself in a human morph and with whom she had fallen in love with. By 1980, she was pregnant with their child. However, the Ellimist returned Elfangor to his original body and homeworld while sending the pregnant Loren, whose memories he altered, three years into the future in order to rectify the discrepancies in the timeline; as a result, she found herself married to another man. In 1984, Loren soon gave birth to a son named Tobias. However, she was involved in a car accident shortly after which rendered her blind as well as entirely amnesiac. Believing Tobias would have a better life without a blind mother who no longer remembered him, she transferred custody of her son to her siblings.

In 2000, Loren was tracked down and placed under Yeerk surveillance after they discovered that Tobias was one of the Animorphs. Tobias then met her and granted her the power to morph, allowing her to evade Yeerk capture while also restoring her eyesight. Loren then lived at the Hork-Bajir Valley for the remainder of the war.

History

Andalite-Yeerk War

"When all this is done, you'll go back to your planet. I go back to mine. And you'll erase all my memories of this." [...]
"No. I wouldn't."
"Why not?"
"Because... because I don't think after all that's happened I could stand to be the only person alive who knew the truth. And I don't think I could stand having you forget me, Loren."
"I care about you, too, Elfangor. I care a lot."
―Loren and Elfangor[src]

As a young girl, Loren was abducted by the Skrit Na along with Chapman. She and Chapman were rescued by the Andalites. Although she was initially simply to be taken back to Earth and her memory erased, the discovery of the Time Matrix resulted in her return being delayed when the Andalite team assigned to return her and Chapman to Earth realized that they were the only ones able to recover the Time Matrix. This allowed her and Elfangor to develop a deeper, closer bond after Arbron was trapped in his Taxxon morph while Alloran-Semitur-Corrass was taken as a Yeerk host. When faced with a situation where the hard-to-control Time Matrix was the only means of escape, Elfangor, his faith shattered, chose to leave the war to live on Earth with Loren, feeling unable to return to his people and unable to bear the thought of erasing Loren's memory of her contact with him even if he could.

Life with Elfangor

"But the most important thing I did as a human was to marry Loren. We had come to care about each other on our adventure. And when she was ready by human standards, I married her."
Elfangor[src]

Once on Earth, Elfangor performed a Frolis Maneuver and took on the alias of Alan Fangor. Loren and Elfangor were soon married and conceived a son, Tobias.

Car Accident

"They brought a little boy to me after the accident. A baby really. They told me he was mine. I didn't remember him. I wanted to. I tried to. But I didn't. I don't remember anything of my life before the accident."
―Loren to Tobias[src]

However, Elfangor was eventually returned to the Andalite-Yeerk War by the Ellimist. The Ellimist also erased Loren's memory of her life with him while leaving the newly-conceived Tobias still in existence.

Reunited with Tobias

"Who is it?"
"It's Tobias. Your son."
"Tobias. I wondered if you'd ever find me."
"You remember me. You know who —"
"No. Not the way you think. I know I have a son. I know his name is Tobias. But that's all I know."
―Loren and Tobias[src]

The full details of her fate in the intervening time are unknown, but it is established that she suffered from amnesia at some point as the result of an accident that left her blind. Although she does not remember Tobias or Elfangor, when the Animorphs discover her they give her the ability to morph, Loren subsequently acquiring Tobias's hawk body and regaining her sight.

Allied with the Animorphs

"Loren, Tobias's mother, had received the ability to morph, but chose not to use it unless we expressly asked for her help in a battle situation. It was a wise decision."

Personality

"Loren was rather delicate in size and stature. But she had successfully survived far too many ordeals ever to be called timid. In my opinion, my brother Elfangor had married a very brave woman."

  1. In The Andalite Chronicles, Loren is rapidly physically aged by the Time Matrix. She then tells Elfangor that she believes she has aged three years and is 18 now, meaning she was 15 for the majority of the book. As the book is set in 1976, this puts Loren's year of birth as being 1961.
